Senior Backend Developer (PHP/Laravel)

About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Developer to help design, build, and scale our applications using PHP and Laravel. You’ll own backend features from technical design through production, make practical architectural decisions, and help the team deliver reliable, maintainable software.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, understands the trade-offs behind technical decisions, and takes responsibility for how their code performs in production.

What you’ll do

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services, REST APIs, and business logic using PHP and Laravel.
• Own features throughout their lifecycle: clarify requirements, propose solutions, implement, test, deploy, and monitor.
• Design database schemas and optimize queries, indexes, and data access patterns.
• Build reliable background jobs, queues, scheduled tasks, and third-party integrations.
• Improve application performance, security, scalability, and observability.
• Write meaningful automated tests and participate in code reviews.
• Investigate production issues, identify root causes, and implement lasting fixes.
• Collaborate with frontend developers, product stakeholders, and other engineers to deliver complete solutions.
• Help improve engineering practices and mentor developers through feedback and knowledge sharing.

What you’ll bring

• Significant professional backend development experience, typically 5+ years, with strong hands-on PHP and Laravel expertise.
• A solid understanding of modern PHP, object-oriented design, dependency injection, and maintainable application architecture.
• Practical experience with Laravel’s ecosystem, including Eloquent, queues, events, validation, authentication, and authorization.
• Strong SQL skills and experience with MySQL or PostgreSQL, including transactions, indexing, and query optimization.
• Experience designing APIs with clear contracts, consistent error handling, and appropriate access controls.
• Familiarity with caching, asynchronous processing, and common failure scenarios such as retries, duplicate jobs, and timeouts.
• Experience writing automated tests with PHPUnit or Pest.
• Working knowledge of Git, Docker, Linux, and CI/CD workflows.
• The ability to break down ambiguous requirements, explain technical trade-offs, and work independently while collaborating effectively.

Nice to have

• Experience building SaaS products or multi-tenant applications.
• Experience with Redis, Laravel Horizon, or Laravel Octane.
• Experience integrating payment providers, subscription billing, or webhook-based services.
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, monitoring tools, and deployment automation.
• Experience modernizing legacy applications or handling larger datasets.
• Familiarity with frontend frameworks such as Vue or React.
